Blog Post #4: Standards, Educator Toolkit, and Assignment 1
Standards
The new standards when it comes to computer education that will be implemented in 2025 are important but a little bit daunting for educators who might not have grown up in the digital age. Even for me, a gen z "screen-ager", this shift brings about some hard feelings. However, upon reading the standards, I can definitely say that I am a little bit more at ease. I hope to teach somewhere between kindergarten and third grade, and these standards tend to be laying the foundation for the hard-core computing that is to come later, so in some ways, my educating of my students is the most important. One of the standards that stood out to me was SC.K.PE.1.2, "Develop a series of steps to complete a task." When I read this, my mind already started spinning with ideas on how to convey this lesson. Needless to say, I am excited to teach.
Educator Toolkit
The resource I am choosing to write about is "Ahoy! Counting to 7 with Polly the Parrot", which is an original student tutorial. This resource matches up with two standards, MA.K.NSO.1.1 and MA.K.NSO.2.1. This resource would be very useful when it comes to introducing counting as either a reinforcing activity, or as the first time they are introduced to counting to seven. I believe students would be very engaged with this resource and would have a very fun time learning about the number seven.
Assignment 1
I really enjoyed the newsletter assignment. I love doing creative things, and being able to learn how to do this now instead of trying to figure it out on the job is incredibly helpful. I learned how to use breaks that aren't necessarily page breaks in my word document, and how to zip a file correctly. I will be able to use the skills I gained in this assignment when it comes to being an educator and having my own classroom, so I can make the best and most informative newsletter for my students and their parents to be prepared for what is to come. Following is a screenshot of my newsletter:
